Aseena Parveen, a seasoned energy engineer with nearly 20 years of experience, has navigated a career marked by both technical challenges and strategic business decisions. Reflecting on her professional journey, Parveen emphasizes the transition from focusing solely on engineering precision to understanding the broader impact of technical choices on project outcomes and business efficiency.
Early in her career, Parveen concentrated on mastering the technical intricacies of energy engineering, particularly within major oil and gas projects. Over time, she recognized that seemingly minor components, such as piping layouts, could significantly affect costs, construction timelines, and material use. This realization prompted her to question not only the functionality of engineering solutions but also their economic and strategic implications. To broaden her perspective, Parveen pursued executive education in energy management at BI Norwegian Business School, in partnership with IFP School in France, where she studied energy economics, risk, and strategy.
In her current role, she prioritizes identifying and mitigating risks and eliminating inefficiencies, underscoring that innovation in decarbonization often starts with smarter design and reducing waste rather than relying solely on breakthrough technologies. Parveen maintains that staying relevant in the energy sector requires continuously reevaluating established knowledge and adapting to evolving challenges.
As a woman in the traditionally male-dominated field of energy engineering, Parveen has encountered and overcome numerous barriers. She notes that early in her career, she assumed that consistent performance alone would ensure recognition. However, she learned that while technical competence builds credibility, visibility and acknowledgement of one’s judgment are equally important. Parveen highlights that confidence often grows through taking on unfamiliar responsibilities rather than waiting for readiness.
Through her mentorship of women pursuing careers in renewable energy, she has observed the transformative power of encouragement in shaping professional ambitions. Parveen advocates for women engineers to engage actively in business decisions, voice their perspectives, and extend their influence beyond strictly technical roles. She advises female professionals not to let their technical skills limit their aspirations but to pursue leadership opportunities that broaden their impact.
Parveen’s career illustrates the evolving role of engineers in the energy sector, blending technical expertise with strategic leadership amid changing industry demands and the drive toward sustainable energy solutions.
