Asfoora, the eight-year-old Australian sprinter trained by Henry Dwyer, is set to defend her title in the Coolmore City Of Troy Nunthorpe Stakes at York. The mare, who has secured three Group One victories on European soil over recent seasons, had faced uncertainty regarding her racing future earlier this year.

After a slow start to the season, failing to perform at her usual level in her first four races, Asfoora finished last in the Coral Charge at Sandown in early July. Consequently, retirement and a transition to broodmare duties were considered. However, her recent performance at Goodwood, where she finished fourth in the King George Stakes, prompted a re-evaluation of those plans. As a result, her connections have decided to delay retirement until after the upcoming Ebor Festival, scheduled for two weeks from now.

Asfoora is currently based at the stable of Lemos de Souza in Newmarket. Amy Murphy, along with her husband de Souza, has been instrumental throughout Asfoora’s European campaign. Murphy stated that the mare is in excellent condition and confirmed her intention to run in the Nunthorpe Stakes.

The decision highlights the confidence in Asfoora’s ability to compete at the top level despite earlier setbacks this season. The Nunthorpe Stakes, a prestigious sprint race, offers an opportunity for the mare to add further distinction to her racing record before she retires to broodmare duties later this month.
