Washington secured a crucial victory over Beverley Town in a key relegation battle at Woodhorn Lane on Saturday, but remain in the bottom four of their league. The match saw both sides vying for vital points as they sought to avoid the drop zone.

The visitors opened the scoring in the 19th minute when Alfence converted a close-range finish to put Beverley Town ahead 1-0. Washington responded strongly, with goalkeeper Matty Alexander making important saves to deny substitutes Luka Suluburic and Cameron Connelly from extending the lead. Defender Paddy Almond also cleared a shot off the line from Jack Watson, who had earlier struck the woodwork.

Washington’s persistence paid off on the half hour mark when Josh Gilchrist scored a well-placed strike to level the game at 1-1. The home side then took the lead before the break through Ryan Wombwell, who headed in from a free-kick delivery by Jude Cogden.

Early in the second half, Washington further extended their advantage. Liam Henderson capitalized on a defensive lapse by Beverley shortly after a free-kick, making it 3-1.

The win provides Washington with a valuable three points in their fight against relegation, although they remain in the league’s bottom four positions. Beverley Town, meanwhile, were unable to build on their early lead, slipping further into the relegation scrap following the defeat.
