Tim Morris has stepped down as chairman of Debenhams, nearly two years after assuming the role and following a period of tension with the company’s largest shareholder, Mike Ashley. Morris’s resignation comes approximately one year after Ashley, whose Frasers group holds a 27% stake in Debenhams, publicly criticized his handling of a significant financing arrangement.

In August 2025, Ashley voiced strong objections to Morris’s decision to secure a £175 million loan facility with a higher interest rate, despite Frasers offering an alternative with a lower rate. At the time, Ashley threatened to remove Morris from his position, citing concerns over the company’s financial management.

Debenhams, which rebranded from Boohoo last year, has since declined to link Morris’s departure directly to the shareholder dispute. Insiders close to the company described the resignation as unrelated to Ashley’s criticism.

The development marks a notable change in leadership as Debenhams continues to navigate the complexities of its financial strategies and shareholder relations amid a challenging retail environment.
