Bumblebee populations in the United Kingdom are facing mounting challenges this summer as the country experiences its fourth heatwave, compounded by the growing threat of invasive Asian hornets. These factors are contributing to a notable decline in bee numbers, raising concerns among conservationists and beekeepers about the future of these vital pollinators.
Bumblebees play a critical role in pollinating wild plants and essential food crops throughout the UK. However, recent data from the Bumblebee Conservation Trust highlights a decrease of up to 35% in populations of common species such as red-tailed, buff-tailed, and common carder bumblebees following last year’s record-breaking temperatures. Experts attribute much of this decline to the impacts of increasingly frequent and intense heatwaves driven by climate change.
Michael Walsh, known as The Urban Apiarist, explained how high temperatures disrupt bumblebee activity and hive maintenance. Above 36°C, young bees begin to die, and the wax in their nests softens. To protect the colony, worker bees expend significant energy cooling the hive by fanning their wings, retrieving water, and clustering outside the nest. This additional strain, combined with heat-induced reductions in available flowers, restricts the bees’ ability to forage, leading to dehydration and exhaustion. Walsh emphasized that hotter, longer heatwaves represent a persistent threat, as bees are not well adapted to such conditions.
In addition to climate-related stresses, British bees are contending with predation from Asian hornets, an invasive species that has not yet become established in the UK but is rapidly increasing in number. A single Asian hornet can consume up to 50 bees daily, posing a severe risk to local hives. Efforts by authorities focus on locating and destroying reported nests to prevent their spread.
Innovative responses to this threat are emerging at the grassroots level. John Childs, an apiarist from Durham, has developed a device called The Hornet Zapper, designed to protect hives by electrically neutralizing attacking hornets. The apparatus uses a bee-shaped lure that moves in the breeze to attract hornets; when they strike, they receive a non-lethal electric shock. Childs reported that his device has successfully killed 11 Asian hornets in 14 minutes, demonstrating potential as a practical tool for beekeepers in managing this invasive predator.
As the UK navigates these intertwined pressures of climate change and invasive species, maintaining healthy bumblebee populations remains a delicate task requiring continued vigilance and adaptive solutions.
