The Houston Astros completed a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Angels with a 7-4 victory on Wednesday night, moving back to .500 for the first time since early April. The win also brought Houston within one game of the first-place Texas Rangers in the American League West standings.
Houston’s starting pitcher Hayden Wesneski made his return to the mound after nearly 15 months out following Tommy John surgery performed in May 2025. Wesneski allowed three runs and seven hits over 5⅔ innings, striking out four and walking two, to secure the win in his first start back. Reliever Bryan Abreu recorded the final four outs to notch his seventh save of the season.
The Angels struck first with a three-run surge in the opening inning, highlighted by a two-run double from Vaughn Grissom and an RBI single from Jo Adell. Houston responded quickly, as solo home runs from Yainer Diaz in the second inning and Jeremy Peña in the third cut the deficit to 3-2.
Los Angeles starter Grayson Rodriguez pitched five innings, allowing two runs on five hits with six strikeouts and two walks. After retiring the side in order in the fourth and fifth innings, Rodriguez was relieved by left-hander Mitch Farris as his pitch count climbed to 98.
The Astros took the lead in the sixth inning when Tyler Trammell walked and Diaz singled with one out. Cam Smith then delivered a two-run double into the left-field corner, putting Houston ahead 4-3. Smith advanced to third and scored on consecutive wild pitches, extending the lead to 5-3.
Houston added another run in the seventh when José Altuve singled and subsequently scored from first base on another single by Diaz. The Angels trimmed the final margin in the eighth inning on an Adell sacrifice fly but were unable to mount a comeback.
The Astros improved to 55-55 overall, winning eight of their last nine games, while the Angels fell to 18 losses in their last 23 contests. The sweep marks a significant momentum boost for Houston as they pursue a postseason spot.
