A new Chinese restaurant has opened in Cambridgeport, offering a menu that emphasizes regional Chinese flavors combined with a focus on health-conscious preparation and attentive service. 212 Kitchen, located at 212 Western Avenue, launched on September 15, replacing a former pizzeria in the neighborhood.

The restaurant is owned by Grace Du, who immigrated from Shenzhen, China, 12 years ago. Du, who is not a professional chef, decided to open the restaurant to provide healthier dining options for the Cambridge community. She was motivated in part by her son’s struggles with unhealthy takeout meals while attending dental school at the University of Pennsylvania.

Du said she wanted to create a welcoming environment where patrons could enjoy not only food but also music and elements of Chinese culture. The interior is described as bright and bamboo-lit, designed to create a soothing atmosphere for guests.

The menu at 212 Kitchen reflects Du’s Shenzhen roots, a city known for its diverse culinary influences from across China. Dishes range from familiar favorites such as kung pao chicken, crab Rangoon, and spring rolls, to regionally inspired items crafted from family recipes. Among the specialties is a homemade winter melon soup with hand-ground shrimp balls, noted for its light, healthy profile with minimal seasoning beyond ginger and scallion.

Other recommended options include steamed fish with tofu and a crispy, spicy lamb shank prepared by chef Ning Ji. The restaurant also offers items like mapo tofu with ground pork, steamed pork and leek dumplings, and fluffy steamed pork buns, which are popular among local students from Harvard and MIT.

One dish highlighted by diners is sliced beef tendon, served with chili oil and Sichuan peppercorns, delivering a spicy and numbing flavor profile. 212 Kitchen also serves flaky ground beef pies, described as thinner and crispier than empanadas, suitable for a quick hand-held snack.

The beverage selection is limited but includes beer, wine, and soft drinks.

212 Kitchen has quickly gained a reputation as a neighborhood establishment with a focus on generous portions, bold flavors, and warm service. The restaurant is reachable at 617-945-1288 and maintains a website for reservations and information.
