At least 11 tornadoes were confirmed across Illinois and Indiana following a severe storm system that struck the Chicago area last week, the National Weather Service reported Saturday. The violent weather caused extensive damage and left hundreds of thousands without power.

Four new tornadoes were added to the tally, all in Indiana, bringing the total to 11. The newly confirmed twisters touched down in Cedar Lake, between Schneider and Hebron, Ludlow, and Boswell. Previously, three tornadoes were confirmed in Illinois: one in northwest suburban Bartlett, a second near Streator in downstate Illinois, and a third that traveled from Graymont to Dwight. Additionally, four tornadoes were confirmed earlier in Indiana, with touchdowns in Merrillville, St. John, Kouts, and Wenona.

No serious injuries or fatalities have been reported in connection with the storms, though significant property damage was noted. As of late Saturday, more than 27,000 customers of Commonwealth Edison (ComEd) remained without power.

Preliminary assessments assigned an EF-1 rating to the Bartlett tornado, indicating wind speeds up to 110 mph. The tornadoes near Streator and Kouts received EF-3 ratings, with winds reaching as high as 165 mph. Local officials continue damage evaluations and indicated the possibility of additional tornado confirmations following further surveys.

Teams were scheduled to inspect damage in several communities including Hickory Hills, Bridgeview, Chicago’s South Side, and areas south of the Kankakee River to provide a more comprehensive assessment of the storm’s impact. Authorities emphasized the importance of ongoing evaluations to fully understand the extent of damage caused by the severe weather event.
