A shooting at a Spirit Halloween store in the Solano Town Center mall in Fairfield, California, on Friday evening resulted in one death and six injuries, authorities said. The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. as shoppers were purchasing last-minute Halloween costumes and decorations.

The victim who died was identified by Fairfield police as 31-year-old pregnant woman Constance Hages. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The six others injured include males aged 16, 18, 19, 23, 32, and 43. Among them, three—aged 16, 19, and 32—remain in critical condition, while the 23-year-old man is in critical but stable condition. Two other victims were treated and released from hospital.

Officials described the shooting as a targeted incident involving a single suspect inside the store. Fairfield Police Chief Dan Marshall stated that detectives are actively working to identify the person responsible. As of Saturday afternoon, no arrests had been made.

Witnesses described chaotic scenes as the shooting unfolded. Janet Jacobo, who was shopping at the store with her three young sons, recalled hearing gunfire and urged her children to flee. She noted that the doors between the mall and the Halloween store were closed for the evening, and another shopper helped rally people to break open a gate to escape. Jacobo carried her youngest son, describing him as “terrified,” while hearing screams nearby.

Other witnesses in the parking lot reported seeing crowds of people running and screaming, noting that many families were present. Some individuals took shelter inside their vehicles until emergency responders arrived. Nearby employees also described hearing multiple gunshots while preparing to close their stores.

Fairfield police urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity as the investigation continues. The police have not released further details about the victims or potential motivations behind the shooting, citing the active nature of the investigation.

In a separate but coincidental incident, a shooting also occurred earlier on Friday at a Spirit Halloween store in Madison Heights, Michigan. In that case, a 21-year-old man shot another 21-year-old man during a brief altercation. Police indicated that the two men were known to each other and confirmed the victim later died from his wounds. The suspect in Michigan is in custody.

Both incidents have raised concerns about security at seasonal retail stores during the busy Halloween shopping period, prompting heightened police presence and community caution in the affected areas.
