A businessman encountered an unexpected situation while paying an electricity bill at an ATM located in a market complex, when the machine dispensed Rs 844,000 in cash. Upon receiving the money, he promptly took it to a nearby bank and handed the amount over to the branch manager.
Following this, the businessman was contacted by the bank manager, who expressed appreciation for his integrity and assured him that the funds would be returned to their rightful owner. Additionally, two bank officials visited the businessman’s workplace to personally thank him for his honesty.
Investigations revealed that the deposited sum of Rs 844,000 had been intended by a customer as a cash deposit through the ATM. However, since the machine’s deposit limit is capped at Rs 200,000, it rejected the excess amount of Rs 644,000. The depositor had left before realizing that the full sum had not been accepted.
The incident highlights both the operational limits of automated banking machines and the ethical response of the individual who found the unexpectedly dispensed cash. The bank is now in the process of ensuring the returned funds reach the original customer.
