The Attorney General’s Office (AGO) of Bangladesh, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), held a convocation and orientation ceremony at the Supreme Court Auditorium on Thursday to mark the conclusion of the second cohort and the induction of the third batch for their joint legal internship programme.

Established in 2025 with financial backing from Sweden, the six-month AGO-UNDP Internship Programme is designed to bridge the divide between academic legal studies and practical professional experience. It provides participating law graduates with exposure to constitutional and public interest cases, legal research opportunities, and mentorship from experienced practitioners.

At the event, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman highlighted the critical role of hands-on experience, professional integrity, and ethics in shaping the next generation of legal professionals. He underscored the importance of a transparent, merit-based selection process that offers equal opportunities to graduates from both public and private universities.

Attorney General Barrister Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal, who presided over the ceremony, emphasized that investing in young lawyers is vital to reinforcing the justice system in Bangladesh. He noted that the programme aims to cultivate a cadre of legal professionals equipped to uphold the rule of law and defend citizens' rights.

Stephen Rodriques, UNDP’s resident representative in Bangladesh, encouraged the interns to apply their legal expertise in service of the public, stressing that understanding the underlying purpose of law is as crucial as mastering its technical aspects. Meanwhile, Swedish Ambassador Nicolas Weeks remarked that the programme is expected to empower emerging legal professionals to support reforms and promote integrity within the justice sector.

Certificates were awarded to outgoing interns recognizing their successful completion of the programme, while Additional Attorney General Mohammad Arshadur Rouf administered the oath to the incoming group.

The internship initiative reflects a collaborative effort by the AGO, UNDP, and the Swedish government to strengthen legal institutions, foster professional ethics, and build a more accountable and effective justice system in Bangladesh. The programme seeks to train at least 100 young legal professionals annually, targeting a total of 500 trainees over the next five years.
