Scientists at the University of Vienna have provided new evidence that dogs can distinguish between different negative human facial expressions, adding to the established understanding that dogs respond to human emotions. Their study, published by Cell Press, reveals that dogs’ brains activate distinct regions when processing a range of human emotional cues, including happiness, sadness, anger, and fear.
Using brain scans, the research team observed how dogs responded to various human facial expressions. The results showed that happy faces primarily engaged the temporal cortex and caudate nucleus—brain areas linked to higher cognitive functions and reward processing. In contrast, negative emotions such as rage, melancholy, and fright activated a separate region, indicating that dogs differentiate between positive and negative signals.
Laura Cuaya, one of the lead researchers at the University of Vienna, emphasized the significance of heightened activity in the caudate nucleus when dogs viewed happy human faces. She suggested that these positive expressions may hold emotional meaning for dogs. However, the team cautioned that their findings, based on visual perception alone, do not fully capture the complexity of canine emotion recognition. Dogs also rely heavily on senses like smell and hearing, which are far more acute than humans', to interpret their environment.
This research builds on earlier studies showing dogs’ abilities to anticipate human seizures and detect disease onset before medical diagnoses are made. Despite these demonstrated sensitivities, previous investigations highlight a common gap in understanding between dogs and their owners. Many owners misinterpret behaviors such as clinginess, which dogs often display when in pain rather than as a sign of affection. Additionally, humans have been found to anthropomorphize dogs by projecting human emotions onto their gestures, sometimes leading to inaccurate interpretations.
The University of Vienna study contributes to the growing body of knowledge about canine emotional intelligence, underscoring dogs’ nuanced perception of human facial expressions and suggesting that their emotional attunement to people is more sophisticated than commonly understood.
