Auckland FC’s campaign in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup came to an end after a 1-0 defeat to Al-Ahli Saudi FC in Jeddah on Sunday. The match marked part of Auckland’s pre-season preparations under new head coach Pedro Moreira, who acknowledged the game’s developmental focus ahead of the A-League season.
Al-Ahli demonstrated their quality early on, with attacking players Ivan Toney, Galeno, and Francisco Trincao consistently challenging Auckland’s defensive line. Despite facing sustained pressure, Auckland goalkeeper Michael Woud was a standout performer, making several impressive saves against powerful strikes from distance.
Auckland FC created opportunities through methodical build-up play involving intricate passing, but they found greater effectiveness when employing a more direct attacking approach. The decisive moment came in the 63rd minute, as Eduard Spertsyan advanced rapidly down Auckland’s right flank before delivering a cross to substitute Saleh Abu Alshamat, who calmly converted the chance to send the Saudi side ahead.
With this victory, Al-Ahli will advance to face South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns in the next round of the tournament. Auckland FC will return to New Zealand to focus on final preparations for their title defence in the upcoming A-League season.
