At peak coverage, more than 90 percent of the Sun’s disk will be obscured, marking the most extensive partial eclipse visible in the region before totality returns in 2090.
The partial eclipse presents some viewing challenges. The reduction in sunlight, despite its considerable magnitude, can be subtle to the naked eye. Experts recommend indirect viewing methods such as using a pinhole projector or items like colanders to project crescent-shaped images of the Sun. Special eclipse glasses are also advised for direct observation, although it is important to verify their condition beforehand, discarding any that are damaged or compromised.
For those chasing totality, the narrow eclipse path spans from Iceland’s west coast across the Atlantic and into Spain, where viewing conditions are less favorable. The event’s timing near sunset in Spain, combined with anticipated cloud cover along much of the northern path, could obscure the critical moments of totality. Additionally, temperature drops during the eclipse may create localized cloud formations, further complicating observation.
Looking ahead, another notable solar eclipse is expected next August, featuring a path of totality that crosses southern Spain, Gibraltar, and northern Africa, including Luxor. Partial views of this event will again be available in the UK.
Solar eclipses remain rare phenomena at any given location, typically occurring once every few centuries. However, there are two eclipse seasons annually, and August also brings a lunar eclipse on the 28th. This event will darken approximately 93 percent of the Moon’s surface as it passes into Earth’s umbral shadow in the early morning. Complementing the eclipses, the Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak on the night of August 12-13, offering ideal conditions for observers, particularly in the absence of moonlight. This shower is renowned for its reliability and brightness, with rates of tens of meteors per hour expected across the UK. Meteors from the Perseids, which originate from debris left by Comet Swift-Tuttle, will appear to radiate from the northeastern sky.
Meanwhile, planetary visibility is currently shifting, with Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn appearing in the morning sky. Saturn, situated in Pisces, remains the most prominent and will have lunar conjunctions on August 4 and 31. Stargazers can also take advantage of summer’s longer nights to observe the Milky Way stretching overhead, notably through the constellation Cygnus, where its brightest star, Deneb, can be found.
