Australia has excluded Marnus Labuschagne from its one-day international (ODI) squad for the upcoming series against Zimbabwe and South Africa, a decision reflecting concerns over the batsman’s recent form. Labuschagne, a key contributor to Australia’s 2023 World Cup triumph, now faces uncertainty regarding his place in the Test side, with selectors indicating his future is under review.
The team will play three ODIs in Zimbabwe followed by three matches in South Africa throughout September. Subsequently, Australia will contest a three-Test series against South Africa, with fixtures scheduled in Durban, Gqeberha, and Cape Town in October. The Test squad for this series is yet to be announced.
In naming the ODI squad, selectors have brought in several emerging talents, including batsman Ollie Peake, 19, as well as all-rounders Joel Davies, 22, and Cooper Connolly, 23. These selections highlight a strategic effort to integrate younger players ahead of Australia’s World Cup title defense next year, which will take place in the same host nations.
Returning to the side are experienced campaigners Mitch Marsh, Travis Head, and fast bowler Josh Hazlewood, all of whom missed earlier ODI series in Pakistan and Bangladesh this year. Premier pacers Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc will participate only in the matches hosted in South Africa as part of workload management plans.
The touring party features a wide array of fast-bowling options, with Spencer Johnson, Nathan Ellis, Xavier Bartlett, and Billy Stanlake included among the 17 players selected. Adam Zampa remains Australia’s sole specialist spinner after Matthew Kuhnemann was omitted from the squad.
Chief selector George Bailey emphasized the importance of the upcoming six-match series as preparation for the World Cup. He noted the blend of experienced players returning and promising newcomers being given opportunities for development. Bailey specifically highlighted Peake and Davies as players highly regarded by the selection panel, describing the series as an ideal platform for their continued growth.
Alongside the senior team’s engagements, Cricket Australia has also announced an Australia A squad scheduled to tour India later this month. The contingent will play two four-day matches and three one-day internationals against India A. This side includes players such as Peter Handscomb and Nathan McSweeney, who could push for senior selection ahead of the upcoming five-Test tour of India in January and February. Fast bowlers Brendan Doggett and Jhye Richardson, both noted for their pace, will also be part of the Australia A squad.
