Australian authorities have confirmed the first mass mortality event of seabirds linked to the H5N1 bird flu virus, with about 50 greater crested terns found dead off the coast south of Adelaide. The discovery was made on Friday near Cape Jaffa, approximately 250 kilometers from the city, during helicopter surveillance of rocks where the birds had gathered.
Agriculture Minister Julie Collins announced that tests on 49 deceased and 35 sick terns confirmed the presence of H5N1, marking the country’s initial large-scale wildlife outbreak of the virus. She warned that Australians should anticipate further spread and increased numbers of affected wildlife, indicating that widespread losses in natural bird populations were beginning to materialize.
Despite the detection in wild seabirds, there is currently no evidence of H5N1 infection on Australian poultry farms. Many farms have implemented strict lockdowns and biosecurity measures since the virus was first identified in the country in June. Collins noted that Australia has confirmed a total of 74 cases of H5N1, with occurrences spanning from Western Australia in the west to Queensland in the northeast, although most cases have been concentrated in South Australia.
Australia, along with neighboring New Zealand—which reported its first H5N1 case last month—has undertaken extensive preparations over recent years to mitigate the impacts of the virus. These efforts include enhanced biosecurity protocols at farms, ongoing testing of shorebirds, vaccination programs for vulnerable species, and planning exercises to respond to outbreaks.
H5N1 bird flu, a highly pathogenic strain, has caused widespread mortality among birds and mammals globally in recent years, with economic losses to poultry industries reaching billions of dollars. The virus has also affected cattle populations in the United States and led to large numbers of bird and seal deaths along beaches worldwide.
While H5N1 can infect humans through close contact with infected animals, such cases remain rare. Health authorities continue to emphasize that the overall risk to human populations is low despite ongoing animal outbreaks.
