Australia opened their group stage campaign at the FIFA World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Turkey on Saturday night in Vancouver, Canada. The win marked a successful return to the tournament for Australia, who are competing in their sixth consecutive and seventh overall World Cup. The match also ended Turkey’s first appearance at the World Cup in 24 years.
Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe scored the goals for the Socceroos, with Irankunda opening the scoring in the 27th minute. The 20-year-old Watford forward became Australia’s youngest-ever World Cup goalscorer, netting a low shot while closely marked by three defenders shortly after the first-half hydration break. In a moment of celebration, Irankunda punched the corner flag—a tribute to Australian soccer legend Tim Cahill. Metcalfe contributed the second goal, solidifying Australia’s lead.
Goalkeeper Patrick Beach was instrumental in the victory, making eight saves, including a notable stop of a long-range shot by Turkey’s Abdulkerim Bardakçı. Beach’s selection in goal came as a surprise to some, with coach Tony Popovic choosing him over the more experienced Matthew Ryan.
Turkey, making their first World Cup appearance since reaching the semifinals in 2002, qualified this year by defeating Kosovo in a playoff. Despite efforts to challenge Australia, including a dangerous free kick by Arda Güler in the 57th minute that was saved by Beach, the Turkish side was unable to find the net.
The match also featured some pre-game tension. Irankunda cited comments made by Turkey captain Hakan Calhanoglu, who had stated that Turkey possessed “more qualities and a more talented team.” Irankunda suggested these remarks served as motivation for the Australian squad, emphasizing the team’s pride and desire not to be underestimated.
Looking ahead, Australia will face the United States on Friday at Lumen Field in Seattle. Both teams are currently leading their groups, setting up a pivotal matchup in the tournament’s next round of fixtures. FIFA president Gianni Infantino was in attendance for Australia’s opening match.
