A recent study conducted in Australia has identified chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease, in 31 former rugby league players. The findings were reported by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, citing data from the Australian Sports Brain Bank.

The study analyzed donated brain tissue from 51 individuals who had participated in rugby league at various levels, including amateur and professional. The diagnosed cases of CTE included players ranging in age from their 20s to their 40s. CTE can only be confirmed through postmortem examination, underscoring challenges in diagnosing the condition during a patient’s lifetime.

CTE is characterized by the accumulation of abnormal tau protein in the brain and has been linked to repeated head trauma. It has also been identified among former athletes in other contact sports, such as rugby union and American football. Previous research has documented similar findings among former National Football League (NFL) players, raising concerns about the long-term neurological impacts of contact sports.

The study’s results contribute to the growing body of evidence on the risks of head injuries in sports involving frequent collisions and impacts. Researchers emphasize the need for ongoing efforts to improve player safety and develop strategies to mitigate brain trauma in rugby league and related sports.
