Bird flu is rapidly spreading across Australia, causing significant mortality among native bird and mammal populations and challenging government efforts to contain the outbreak. Since the country’s first confirmed case of the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain in June, the virus has led to large-scale deaths, particularly among species unique to Australia.
The initial detection occurred in a migratory brown skua along the southern coast, and since then, the infection has expanded extensively. Official records indicate 309 confirmed bird flu events, encompassing multiple deaths within single incidents rather than individual cases. Among the affected species are greater crested terns, silver gulls, and little penguins. South Australia has been hit hardest, with 194 reported events. Local authorities estimate that over 1,000 crested terns have succumbed to the disease on three offshore islands.
Environment Minister Murray Watt recently cautioned that widespread fatalities among birds and mammals are expected, urging the public to remain realistic despite the distressing implications. Authorities report no cases in poultry farms to date, and the risk to humans remains low. People are advised not to touch affected wildlife but to document and report sightings through designated hotlines.
Experts express concern about the speed of the virus’s spread. Euan Ritchie, a wildlife ecology professor at Deakin University, noted that Australia’s long evolutionary isolation has produced species without natural immunity to such pathogens, increasing their vulnerability. The Australian sea lion, classified as vulnerable with fewer than 10,000 adults in the wild, is among the species at particular risk.
Australia’s introduction to this strain marks a significant challenge, as past outbreaks involving other avian influenza variants were successfully eradicated. In response, the government initiated vaccination efforts last month, targeting at-risk species such as the little penguins on Victoria’s coast. Alongside vaccination, millions of dollars have been allocated for enhanced surveillance and early detection measures.
However, some conservationists and scientists have criticized the government for the pace of vaccine deployment and call for stronger habitat protections. Epidemiologist Ariful Islam of Charles Sturt University emphasized that vaccination is no cure-all for wild bird populations and highlighted the need for careful monitoring to ensure vaccine efficacy.
Public volunteers are actively assisting in monitoring efforts. In South Australia, Maureen Christie, secretary of Friends of Shorebirds SE, regularly surveys coastlines for sick or dead birds. While recent reports suggest a decrease in mortality, the toll on volunteers has been emotionally taxing.
The virus has not only affected birds but has also crossed species barriers to infect mammals. Globally, H5N1 has been confirmed in diverse mammals including cows, cats, and raccoons, with marine mammals experiencing severe losses. In South America, over 24,000 sea lions died within a year due to the virus. Australia confirmed its first case in a long-nosed fur seal last month, with a second probable fatality reported recently.
Jane Younger, a seal expert at the University of Tasmania, warned that an outbreak among marine mammals such as the Australian sea lion could lead to an extinction-level event. Vaccines for mammals have yet to be approved in Australia, and containment remains difficult given the virus’s spread through wild animals with minimal human control.
