Austria experienced its hottest summer since weather records began 260 years ago, according to Geosphere Austria, the country's state weather service. The average air temperature between June 1 and August 31 was 2.6 degrees Celsius above the 1991-2020 average and 4.4 degrees Celsius higher than the 1961-1990 average. This marks a significant rise in temperatures during the summer months.
Temperature records were broken at more than 100 weather stations across Austria, with the mercury surpassing 41 degrees Celsius for the first time since systematic measurements started. Alongside the heat, the country also experienced notably low precipitation, receiving about one-third less rainfall than the long-term average over the same period.
Climatologist Alexander Orlik from Geosphere Austria described the summer as “extraordinary, extreme or unprecedented,” noting the exceptional nature of the high temperatures, the length of heatwaves, the frequency of hot and extremely hot days, as well as tropical nights. Additionally, the typically cold high mountain areas saw an unusually low number of frost days.
The severe conditions had visible impacts beyond temperature records. For instance, low water levels on the Danube River stranded a ship on dry land, highlighting the effects of prolonged heat and drought on Austria’s waterways and environment.
The summer’s data underscores a continuing trend of rising temperatures in the region, with indicators pointing to intensified climate variability and the increasing frequency of extreme weather events. Authorities and experts warn that such conditions may become more common if current climate patterns persist.
