Austria’s national football team is entering a new chapter following the international retirements of veterans Marko Arnautovic and David Alaba after their exit from the 2026 World Cup.
The team bowed out in the round of 32 with a 3-0 loss to Spain, marking the end of an era for two of Austria’s most influential players. Arnautovic, 37, confirmed his retirement immediately after the match, reflecting on an 18-year career with the national side that included 137 caps, 49 goals, and 23 assists. “At the final whistle, I knew it was the last time,” he said.
Alaba, three years younger and currently a Real Madrid player, hinted that he might also retire from international football following the defeat. He described an emotional atmosphere in the locker room but said his focus remained solely on the World Cup, with no prior consideration given to his future decisions at either club or international levels.
Both players were instrumental in elevating Austria’s profile on the global stage, helping the nation reach the World Cup for the first time since 1998. Progressing to the knockout rounds represented a significant achievement and a sign of growth for the Austrian team.
With the departure of these seasoned leaders, Austria is now looking to younger talent to carry the mantle forward. Standout prospects such as 20-year-old PSV Eindhoven midfielder Paul Wanner, 25-year-old Nicolas Seiwald, and 22-year-old Carney Chukwuemeka—formerly of Chelsea—have shown encouraging performances during the tournament.
As Austria transitions to this new generation, expectations are rising for these emerging players to build on the foundation laid by Arnautovic and Alaba and continue the nation’s resurgence in international football.
