Lexus and Mercedes-Benz have unveiled redesigned versions of their midsize luxury sedans, the Lexus ES and Mercedes CLA, for the 2026 model year, each available in both gasoline-powered and fully electric variants. These new electric models mark a significant advancement in luxury EV offerings, delivering competitive features at comparatively affordable price points. Industry experts recently evaluated the two vehicles to assess how they compare across several key criteria, including space, range, performance, technology, and value.
In terms of interior space and comfort, the Lexus ES stands out as the larger vehicle, offering more rear legroom and a bigger trunk than the Mercedes CLA. The ES’s dimensions surpass even some larger electric sedans like the BMW i5 and Lucid Air. Rear-seat passengers can opt for reclining seats with adjustable footrests, enhancing comfort for long drives. The ride quality of the ES was also noted as smoother over rough road surfaces. However, the CLA’s front seats received slightly higher marks for comfort in driver evaluations, though overall, the ES took the lead in this category.
When it comes to driving range and charging, the Mercedes CLA boasts superior figures. The CLA 250+ model, equipped with a single electric motor, achieves an EPA-estimated 374 miles on a full charge and exceeded this in real-world testing by traveling approximately 434 miles. The dual-motor AWD CLA 350 offers an EPA range of 312 miles and performed similarly well in tests. The Lexus ES comes in two electric variants: the single-motor ES 350e with an EPA range of 307 miles and the dual-motor ES 500e rated at 276 miles. Real-world testing closely matched official estimates for the ES 350e. Charging speeds further favored the CLA, which supports up to 300 kW DC fast charging, enabling it to add 100 miles of range in about seven minutes, compared to the ES’s 150 kW ceiling and 13-minute charging time.
On performance and driving dynamics, the CLA’s more compact design and sportier tuning give it an edge over the ES. The CLA 350 accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, considerably quicker than the ES 350e, which takes 7.6 seconds. Although the ES 500e offers more power than the base ES model, the CLA’s sport sedan feel and agility appeal more to drivers seeking performance.
In-car technology presents a more subjective choice. Mercedes-Benz equips the CLA with a large, integrated dashboard screen featuring high-resolution graphics and rapid response times, though some find the interface overwhelming. Lexus offers a simpler, more straightforward infotainment system in the ES that prioritizes ease of use over flashiness, which may appeal to less tech-savvy users.
Pricing for both vehicles is closely aligned, with the Lexus ES 350e starting at approximately $48,895 and the Mercedes CLA at $49,400. While the ES offers more interior space and standard features such as ventilated seats and wireless phone charging, the CLA delivers superior range, faster charging, and a more engaging driving experience.
Overall, both electric sedans have been well received, but the Mercedes CLA earned a slightly higher rating from reviewers, largely due to its advantages in range, charging capability, and performance. Meanwhile, the Lexus ES remains a compelling option for buyers prioritizing comfort and interior space at an accessible price point.
