Aveley secured their place in the FA Trophy Second Round with a 2-1 victory over Carshalton Athletic, marking their fifth progression to this stage in eight seasons. Prior to the 2019-20 campaign, Aveley had not advanced past the Second Round in the previous 33 seasons.

The two teams last met at this stage in 2019-20 when a 3-3 draw at Carshalton led to a replay at Parkside, where Aveley emerged victorious. Six years later, the Millers once again prevailed.

Aveley opened the scoring within the first ten minutes. Ellis Bates delivered a crossfield pass to Giovanni Palmer, who moved in from the left flank. Palmer’s effort, which appeared to be a cross, sailed over Carshalton goalkeeper Ben Dudzinski and into the net off the far post.

Carshalton created several opportunities to equalise, with Nathan Young-Coombes firing wide from close range. Aveley responded with Matty Johnson missing a headed chance.

Just under ten minutes after halftime, Aveley doubled their lead. Palmer set up Harry Critchley, who found the net with a header from a corner kick. Carshalton pressed to reduce the deficit, but a notable double save by 16-year-old Aveley goalkeeper George Miller denied Young-Coombes and Fadahunsi, the latter’s shot striking the post.

Carshalton managed to pull a goal back through a Toure header in the fourth minute of added time, but they were unable to find an equaliser. Aveley held on to secure their advancement to the next round of the competition.
