Avi Nesher’s latest film, *Our Loves*, has been selected for screening at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), marking a significant milestone in the film’s international exposure. TIFF, recognized as North America’s largest film festival and a key platform for global cinematic launches, will present *Our Loves* in its Centrepiece program, which highlights acclaimed films from around the world.
The film, which explores the intertwined lives of seven characters affected by the October 7 massacre in Israel, delves into their personal struggles and the impact of the traumatic events on their relationships. Set against the backdrop of that harrowing day, the narrative reveals hidden truths and personal transformations as the characters strive to survive. The cast features prominent Israeli actors such as Shalom Michaelshwilli, Magie Azarzar, Yaniv Biton, and Hadas Yaron, alongside newcomer Daniel Gimpel.
*Our Loves* was produced by United King Films and SIPUR, an Israeli international entertainment studio, in partnership with Artomas Communications and Zoa Films. Recently, international companies FOX Entertainment Studios and Access Entertainment have joined as co-producers. Access Entertainment has a track record of producing acclaimed films, including Oscar winners such as *The Zone of Interest* and *Conclave*. The involvement of these global partners represents a notable advancement in countering the unofficial boycott of Israeli cinema, especially for films that address explicit Israeli narratives in Hebrew.
The announcement of the TIFF selection closely followed *Our Loves* receiving 12 nominations at this year’s Ophir Awards, Israel’s leading film awards. Nominations include best picture, director, screenplay, cinematography, editing, and original music, underscoring the film’s critical recognition within the Israeli film industry.
Avi Nesher, a prominent figure in Israeli cinema with a career spanning over two decades, draws on historical and real-life events in his work. His previous films include *The Troupe* (1978), *Contum Left at the End of the World* (2004), *The Matchmaker* (2010), and *Image of Victory* (2021), the latter focusing on the 1948 War of Independence.
Emilio Schenker, CEO of SIPUR, emphasized the significance of the film’s international exposure, stating that *Our Loves* offers a human perspective on the events of October 7 and that its presence at TIFF breaks through barriers posed by the boycott against Israeli cinema. Liron Edery, head of marketing and distribution at United King Films, echoed this view, expressing optimism that the festival selection signals weakening opposition to Israeli films globally. She highlighted the film’s themes of healing and resilience, and its potential to resonate with international audiences.
The film’s prospects for major international awards received attention during a panel discussion at the Jerusalem Film Festival, where Access Entertainment president Danny Cohen noted that *Our Loves* could have potential as Israel’s submission for the Academy Awards’ Best International Feature category.
