Axel Fairfull, originally from the New South Wales mining town of Cobar, has emerged as a key player for Queensland White in this year’s Australian Schoolboys Rugby League (ASSRL) National Championships. Despite his New South Wales roots, Fairfull has positioned himself as a vital member of the Queensland under-18 side, which is competing in the tournament in Coffs Harbour.

Two years ago, Fairfull made the decisive move to Caloundra State High School in Queensland, seeking to develop his rugby league career under the guidance of schoolboys coach Toby Poole. Since relocating as a teenager, the lock forward has made significant strides, earning a spot in Poole’s squad as Queensland fields two under-18 teams at the national championships for the first time—Queensland Maroon and Queensland White.

Fairfull’s recent achievements include captaining the Sunshine Coast Falcons Mal Meninga Cup side, highlighting his leadership and skill on the field. He attributes much of his progress to the coaching and mentorship provided by Poole, as well as steadfast support from his family back in New South Wales.

“Mr Poole has really helped skyrocket my game,” Fairfull said, reflecting on his development since moving to Queensland in grade 10. He acknowledged that early on, he overestimated his readiness, but the coaching he has received has been pivotal in shaping his performance and approach.

The National Championships offer Fairfull a platform to showcase his talents in his home state, with family members expected to attend matches. His ambition is clear: to attract attention from clubs that could propel his career forward.

“The main goal is to get noticed and hopefully signed to take my footy somewhere next year,” Fairfull said. He emphasized dedication to continuous improvement, focusing on playing his best and honing his skills.

Queensland White is set to begin its campaign with an all-Queensland clash on Monday, marking the start of the historic event that sees the state fielding two teams at the under-18 national level for the first time. Fairfull’s journey from a regional New South Wales town to a pivotal role in Queensland’s youth rugby league program illustrates the pathways emerging in the sport and the impact of dedicated coaching and personal commitment.
