Bac Ninh province in northern Vietnam is aiming to enhance its position in the semiconductor supply chain by strengthening infrastructure, expanding skilled labor, and implementing policies to attract investment in chip design, research and development, and core technology production. The provincial Department of Science and Technology reported that Bac Ninh has secured approximately US$2.74 billion in investments across 33 semiconductor-related projects.
Of these projects, six focus on semiconductors and semiconductor materials, while 27 involve the production of equipment and components. Among the largest investments is Amkor Technology Vietnam, which has committed US$1.6 billion to its facility in Yen Phong 2-C Industrial Park and employs over 2,000 workers. The company is currently working to increase its output capacity to around 3.6 billion units annually. Amkor Technology stated that its production volume in Vietnam has doubled compared to the previous year and that it intends to continue expanding operations in Bac Ninh.
Another significant investor, Hana Micron Vina, is also scaling up production in the province with a total investment of US$669 million. The company specializes in manufacturing, testing, and packaging semiconductor products. Additional contributors to Bac Ninh’s semiconductor ecosystem include Micro Commercial Components, Synergie Cad, and FPT, as well as several firms supplying equipment and components to the industry.
Bac Ninh has developed a substantial electronics manufacturing sector, hosting approximately 1,282 electronics companies and employing nearly 482,000 workers. However, the province’s semiconductor activities predominantly focus on manufacturing, packaging, testing, and supporting services. Higher value segments such as integrated circuit design, research and development, and core semiconductor technology production remain limited.
Vu Phuong Thao, deputy director of Bac Ninh’s Department of Finance, noted that the province is still in the early stages of integrating into the global semiconductor value chain. Efforts are ongoing to foster the development of more advanced semiconductor capabilities to increase the region’s competitiveness in this strategic sector.
