The Bahla Heritage Market has reopened following an extensive restoration and development project aimed at preserving its traditional architectural identity and enhancing its function as a commercial and tourist hub. The initiative, overseen by Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, involved an investment of more than RO 477,000 and focused on rehabilitating the market's infrastructure, facilities, and historic character.
The restoration included the refurbishment of 62 shops, improvements to walkways and internal passages, and upgrades to essential services. Infrastructure enhancements encompassed the modernization of electricity and water networks, drainage improvements, construction of a 150-metre falaj irrigation canal, development of parking areas, and the paving of pedestrian pathways. Notably, overhead power lines were relocated underground to preserve the site's aesthetic integrity.
Additional measures aimed at visitor comfort incorporated shaded pedestrian routes, new lighting installations designed to complement the market’s traditional style, restrooms, seating areas, and improved ventilation and shading throughout the complex.
Eng Mohammed bin Ali al Wardi, Director of the Projects Department at Al Dakhiliyah Municipality, emphasized that the project sought to maintain the market’s heritage features while upgrading infrastructure to meet modern needs of both shop owners and visitors. He highlighted the balancing act between conserving the site’s historic elements and facilitating better circulation and service provision.
The market holds significant cultural and economic importance within the Bahla Oasis, which is recognized on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Ali bin Said al Adawi, acting director of the Bahla Fort site, described the market as a vital expression of the region’s architectural traditions, social life, and oral heritage. According to al Adawi, the market continues to serve as a focal point for traditional crafts and small businesses, preserving the unique character that reflects its longstanding role in the community.
The revitalization aims to bolster the market’s appeal both as a local commercial center and as a destination for visitors, supporting the sustainability of traditional industries and enriching the cultural landscape of Bahla.
