Daniel Thomas, a 37-year-old anti-migrant activist, has been remanded in custody ahead of his trial next year on charges of criminal damage involving a small boat in the English Channel. Thomas, who is also known to supporters as Danny Tommo, appeared via videolink from HMP Winchester at Portsmouth Crown Court. His address was not disclosed at an earlier hearing.

Thomas faces accusations of slashing a dinghy that was carrying migrants along with an emergency responder on board. He has pleaded not guilty to the charge, as well as to failing to provide police with the PIN to his phone. During a previous hearing, Thomas denied the allegations.

Judge James Newton-Price KC, presiding over the case, emphasized that political motivations surrounding the incident would not influence the court’s decision on bail. Bail was subsequently refused. At the hearing, Thomas was seen wearing a grey T-shirt and holding a Bible close to his face.

The alleged incident occurred on September 22, when Thomas reportedly livestreamed himself from the Channel on social media, addressing a large audience. Prosecutors claim he stated, “This is what needs to happen” and “This is England, this isn’t France anymore” during the broadcast at approximately 4:30 p.m.

A provisional trial date has been set for March 1, with the next court hearing scheduled for November 12, during which Thomas will again appear remotely via videolink. The case has attracted public attention due to its connection to sensitive migration issues in the region and the defendant’s activism.
