Falkirk manager John McGlynn acknowledged that Ayr United appeared the more determined side as his team suffered a 1-0 defeat in the Premier Sports Cup on Tuesday. The sole goal came from a first-half header by Ayr’s Kevin Holt, which proved decisive at Falkirk's home ground.
McGlynn expressed frustration with his team’s performance during the opening half, describing their build-up play as slow and predictable, allowing Ayr to maintain control without significant pressure. He noted that adjustments made during the interval, including adopting a more direct attacking approach, generated more opportunities, with Falkirk delivering multiple crosses into the box. However, the players failed to capitalize on these chances, particularly in aerial duels, which McGlynn highlighted as a key shortcoming in both defensive and offensive situations.
A late opportunity to equalize was squandered when Ross MacIver missed a penalty, denying Falkirk a chance to salvage a point. Despite creating several corners, the home side struggled to assert dominance in crucial moments and were ultimately outmatched by a more motivated Ayr team.
With this result, Ayr United strengthened their position atop Group G, placing Falkirk in a challenging spot as they prepare to face Alloa and Stranraer in their remaining fixtures. McGlynn conceded that even securing maximum points in their next two games might not guarantee progression, leaving Falkirk reliant on favorable outcomes elsewhere in the group.
