An upcoming coronial inquest into the 2013 death of Gold Coast Titans cheerleader Breeana Robinson is expected to examine allegations of domestic violence involving her boyfriend, Dan Shearin, who has legally changed his name to Jayden Moorea. Robinson, 21, died on January 29, 2013, after falling 11 storeys from Moorea’s balcony.

Moorea was initially charged with Robinson’s murder, but the charge was dropped in 2023. The inquest, originally scheduled to begin next month, may now be delayed until the latter half of 2027. The Coroners Court of Queensland cited several factors contributing to the postponement, including difficulties obtaining transcripts from Moorea’s committal proceedings, the ill health of Robinson’s mother, Elaine, and expected delays related to reanalysis of forensic samples.

Samples initially gathered by Forensic Science Queensland, known for challenges in its DNA laboratory, are thought unlikely to shed additional light due to the shared living arrangement of Moorea and Robinson, Deputy State Coroner Donald MacKenzie said. He noted that because both individuals resided together, their DNA would be present throughout the environment, limiting the evidentiary value of such testing.

Coroner MacKenzie emphasized that the central focus of the inquest would not be forensic evidence but the nature of the relationship between Robinson and Moorea. He described the relationship as troubled by allegations of emotional abuse, coercive control, and behaviors described as stalking-adjacent, including surveillance.

“It’s the domestic violence evidence that has caused this inquest,” MacKenzie stated, adding that other details had previously been addressed during the committal proceedings for Moorea’s murder charge before it was discontinued.

The court has already admitted 69 witness statements from women who formerly had relationships with Moorea, providing testimony relating to the conduct and dynamics cited in those allegations. These statements are expected to be a key aspect of the inquest’s investigation.

A pre-inquest conference has been scheduled for February 5, 2027. Authorities have not indicated a revised date for the full inquest proceedings.
