Sunderland’s defender Dan Ballard has expressed optimism about the team’s progress during their ongoing pre-season tour in the United States, following his first appearance of the summer against Liverpool on Monday in Nashville.

Ballard featured for 45 minutes at Geodis Park as Sunderland continue their preparations ahead of the upcoming campaign. The defender acknowledged the challenging climatic conditions but emphasized the value of the experience in building match fitness and tactical cohesion.

“The climate was difficult but we got what we needed out of the game and we’ll take a lot of positives from it,” Ballard said. He noted the importance of incremental development at this early stage, stating, “It’s an important time of the year and we have to keep building every game now.” Having not played competitively for several months, Ballard welcomed the chance to regain sharpness on the field.

Despite efforts to maintain possession against a strong Liverpool side, Sunderland faced intense pressure from the Premier League team’s pressing strategy. Ballard acknowledged these challenges, saying, “Liverpool pressed us a lot, so we had to be able to manage that.” The match offered a rigorous test for the squad, highlighting areas for improvement as they prepare for the season ahead.

The Black Cats, supported by a sizable contingent of traveling fans, received encouragement from the large Sunderland following present in Tennessee. Ballard described the turnout as “amazing” and “a shock,” reflecting the enthusiasm among supporters willing to make the journey across the Atlantic.

Overall, the defender viewed the tour positively, citing the benefits of competing in different conditions. “Coming to Nashville has been great for the squad and playing in this climate is also going to benefit us moving forward,” he added.

Sunderland’s continued engagement in their US tour is seen as a crucial phase in readying the squad for the rigors of the campaign ahead, with a focus on both physical conditioning and tactical development.
