Renowned ballet figure Li Cunxin is set to return to the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) on September 29 to mark the launch of his new book, The Lucky Son. The event will feature a conversation between Li and journalist and screenwriter Benjamin Law.
Li Cunxin, the former artistic director of Queensland Ballet, gained global recognition through his remarkable journey from a humble childhood in Communist China to becoming a celebrated ballet dancer. His life story first reached a wide audience with the bestselling memoir Mao’s Last Dancer.
After leading Queensland Ballet for 11 years, Li stepped down from his role as artistic director at the end of 2023. He cited significant health challenges, including heart problems of his own and his wife Mary’s battle with cancer, as reasons for his retirement. The couple has been married since 1987.
In his upcoming book, set for release on October 6 by Penguin Books, Li is expected to explore themes of love, learning, leadership, and legacy, drawing on his extensive personal and professional experiences. The event at QPAC will provide an opportunity for fans and the public to engage directly with Li as he shares reflections from his life and career.
