A major redevelopment project is set to transform the site of San Francisco’s former Candlestick Park into one of the Bay Area’s largest master-planned neighborhoods. Five Point, a California-based developer, announced plans to begin construction in September on a 270-acre community named Candlestick, which will feature over 7,200 homes alongside office spaces, retail shops, and parks.
The initial phase of the development will cover seven city blocks and include approximately 675 homes. Developers expect infrastructure work for this phase to be completed within two years. The project represents a significant effort to address San Francisco’s housing shortage, which stood at an estimated deficit of 130,000 homes as of 2024.
Candlestick Park, once home to the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers and known for harsh weather conditions during its years as a Major League Baseball stadium, has remained vacant for more than a decade following its demolition. The surrounding neighborhood is economically mixed and has generally expressed support for redevelopment initiatives aimed at increasing affordable housing and local employment opportunities.
Financial backing for the project includes support from San Francisco’s Office of Community Investment and Infrastructure, as well as a $20 million federal grant to assist with development costs. Despite this support, master-planned communities such as Candlestick typically face challenges related to real estate market volatility and the need for substantial upfront investment in infrastructure and amenities.
One notable concern with the redevelopment remains the area’s persistent wind and chill, conditions that contributed to the stadium’s poor reputation among baseball fans. Local meteorologists indicate that coastal breezes will likely continue regardless of the removal of stadium structures, suggesting that the neighborhood’s weather will remain a factor even as the site is transformed.
As the Candlestick project moves forward, it exemplifies broader efforts within San Francisco to increase housing supply and revitalize underutilized urban spaces amid ongoing demand pressures.
