Thousands of residents in Bangkok sought refuge in emergency shelters last Sunday after persistent heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding across the Thai capital. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration reported that nearly 4,900 people were evacuated as floodwaters inundated homes and roadways, disrupting daily life.
The floods affected approximately 52,000 households, prompting authorities to declare a disaster across the city. The Meteorological Department recorded more than 330 millimeters of rain between Thursday and Sunday, intensifying the situation in a period already known for high precipitation.
September marks the peak of Thailand’s rainy season, a pattern typically associated with extensive rainfall. However, many residents described this year’s flooding as particularly severe compared to previous years. The capital’s drainage systems and infrastructure faced significant strain under the volume of water.
Thailand has experienced similar events in recent history, with the 2011 floods standing out as particularly devastating. Those floods resulted in over 500 fatalities nationwide and caused extensive damage to millions of homes.
Authorities continue to monitor weather conditions closely and are coordinating relief efforts to assist affected communities throughout Bangkok.
