Asad Alam Siam, the current foreign secretary of Bangladesh, is set to assume the role of the country’s high commissioner to India, according to senior diplomatic officials. Formal approval from India, known as an agrément, has reportedly been granted and conveyed to Bangladesh, paving the way for the appointment.

The Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi was officially notified of the development via email on Tuesday, Saidur Rahman, press minister at the high commission, confirmed. Siam is presently in New York City, accompanying Prime Minister Tarique Rahman as part of the Bangladeshi delegation to the United Nations General Assembly.

Following Siam’s transfer, Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, who recently served as Bangladesh’s permanent representative to the United Nations, is expected to be appointed as the new foreign secretary. Officials have indicated that this appointment will take place soon.

Siam’s upcoming posting to New Delhi is widely regarded as one of Bangladesh’s most significant diplomatic positions, reflecting the importance of relations between the two neighboring countries. Meanwhile, M Riaz Hamidullah, the current Bangladeshi high commissioner to India, is anticipated to return to Dhaka to serve as permanent secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The personnel changes underscore ongoing efforts by the Bangladeshi government to strengthen its diplomatic engagements ahead of key regional and international developments. Exact timelines for the transitions have not been disclosed.
