The death toll from a measles outbreak in Bangladesh has surpassed 1,000 children since March, officials reported Wednesday, highlighting challenges in the country's vaccination campaign. The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) confirmed 1,002 fatalities and 187,484 infections among children in 2026, marking the deadliest measles outbreak in Bangladesh in decades.

Measles, a highly contagious viral disease transmitted through respiratory droplets, poses significant risks to young children, who are more susceptible to severe complications such as brain swelling and respiratory distress. Although no specific treatment exists once infected, vaccination remains the primary method of control.

In response to the outbreak, Bangladeshi health authorities launched a mass immunization campaign, vaccinating over 18 million children to date. Nevertheless, a substantial number of children remain unvaccinated. DGHS spokesman Zahid Raihan indicated that approximately 4 million children were missed during the campaign, creating vulnerable clusters that sustained the spread of the virus.

“We couldn’t achieve herd immunity,” Raihan acknowledged, underscoring the persistent challenges faced by health workers in reaching all eligible children. Efforts continue to identify and vaccinate those who have been missed to curb further transmission.

Beyond vaccination efforts, Raihan emphasized the role of underlying health conditions in exacerbating the outbreak. Chronic malnutrition, prevalent among Bangladeshi children, can weaken immune systems and increase the severity of measles infections, complicating control measures.

“Measles cannot be eradicated and the aim was to reduce casualties. We will keep vaccinating our children,” Raihan stated, affirming the ongoing commitment to immunization initiatives despite the hurdles encountered.

Officials and health experts stress that controlling the outbreak requires a multifaceted approach, including improved nutrition and continued vaccination coverage, to reduce morbidity and mortality rates among vulnerable populations.
