Bangladesh plans to emphasize the need for fair compensation for workers affected by climate change and the protection of their livelihoods at the 31st Conference of the Parties (COP31) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Shaikh Faridul Islam outlined the country’s priorities during an event in Dhaka on Tuesday.
Addressing journalists, Faridul Islam highlighted the severe impacts of climate change on Bangladesh’s coastal communities, noting significant challenges to food security, healthcare, education, and infrastructure. The minister underscored the importance of ensuring workers who bear the brunt of climate-related disruptions receive adequate recognition and support in global climate discussions.
In addition, Bangladesh aims to secure sufficient international financing to tackle climate-related loss and damage. The country seeks enhanced financial resources and international cooperation to bolster its adaptation and mitigation efforts.
At COP31, Bangladesh intends to underline both the country’s vulnerabilities and its domestic initiatives to combat climate change. Faridul Islam emphasized the need for meaningful representation of affected workers and communities in international negotiations, advocating for equitable treatment and support from the global community.
