The Bangladesh women’s field hockey team secured ninth place at the Asian Games after a closely contested match against Singapore at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium in Japan on Friday. The match, part of the ninth to twelfth place playoff stage, ended in a 1-1 draw after regulation time, with Bangladesh prevailing 2-1 in the subsequent penalty shootout.
Bangladesh began the match strongly, taking an early lead in the 10th minute through a field goal by Irin Akter Riya. The team maintained their advantage throughout the first half, despite mounting pressure from Singapore in the second half.
The balance of the game shifted in the 42nd minute when Bangladesh was temporarily reduced to ten players following a yellow card shown to Lima Akter, resulting in her temporary suspension under the competition’s rules. Singapore capitalized on this numerical advantage, leveling the score just two minutes later when Tou Li Min converted a penalty corner.
With neither team able to break the deadlock during the remaining match time, the outcome was decided by a penalty shootout. Bangladesh demonstrated composure under pressure, edging out Singapore 2-1 to claim ninth place.
This result reflects Bangladesh’s competitive showing at the tournament, concluding their campaign on a positive note after earlier challenges in the competition. The Asian Games field hockey contest featured teams from across the continent, with Bangladesh’s women’s squad demonstrating resilience and skill throughout the event.
