A Dhaka court has ordered the remand of a former youth political leader and three others in connection with an alleged extortion attempt, assault, and firing of blank rounds in the city's Banglamotor area. The incident, which reportedly involved a Tk50,000 extortion demand, took place last Thursday evening.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Israt Jahan granted a four-day remand to Ferdous Ahmed Simon, the former convener of the Hatirjheel thana Jubo Dal, while three other suspects—identified as Omar, 32; Morshed, 25; and Shaon, 25—were each remanded for three days. The four suspects were produced before the court on Friday, with no legal representation present on their behalf during the hearing, according to prosecution sources.

Sub-Inspector Nasim of Hatirjheel Police Station, who is leading the investigation, had requested seven days’ remand for each suspect to facilitate further inquiries into the case. Police reports indicate that the accused are alleged members of an organized extortion and criminal group active in the area. The investigation aims to identify additional individuals involved, locate those still at large, and uncover further details surrounding the incident.

The accused are reportedly linked to multiple drug-related cases registered with Hatirjheel and Kalabagan police stations, according to the remand petition.

According to the case statement, the events unfolded around 7:15 p.m. near a residence in New Eskaton, close to Banglamotor under the jurisdiction of Hatirjheel Police Station. Ferdous Ahmed Simon allegedly confronted a man named Sohan, demanding Tk50,000. When Sohan refused to comply, Simon is said to have brandished a pistol, pointed it at Sohan’s chest, and attempted to shoot him. Instead, Simon reportedly struck Sohan on the head with the butt of the pistol while his associates physically assaulted the victim.

As bystanders gathered, the suspects fled the scene. Sohan initially received first aid at a nearby pharmacy and was en route to seek further medical treatment when his brother-in-law, Moktar Hossain, accompanied him. The accused then returned on a motorcycle and reportedly attempted a second assault, targeting both Sohan and Moktar.

During the confrontation, Simon allegedly discharged three blank rounds, prompting local residents to pursue the group. Several suspects were apprehended at the scene, with Simon arrested while trying to escape. Police subsequently took the detainees into custody.

Following the incidents, Sohan formally filed the case with Hatirjheel Police Station, setting the investigation and legal proceedings in motion.
