Former England rugby captain Lawrence Dallaglio has auctioned a collection of memorabilia in an effort to address his financial difficulties, with his 2003 World Cup winner’s medal selling for £54,000—significantly below its estimated value. The sale took place at Budds auction house in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, where Dallaglio parted with 12 items, raising a total of £100,500. However, another ten pieces of his career memorabilia failed to find buyers.
Among the items sold were his 2003 Six Nations winner’s medal, which fetched £7,500; his 2004 Champions Cup victory medal, sold for £4,400; and his 2007 Rugby World Cup runners-up medal, which went for £5,000. The World Cup winner’s medal had initially been valued at up to £80,000 prior to the auction.
Dallaglio, 54, was declared insolvent last year following a divorce from his wife of nearly two decades, Alice. Reports have suggested that excessive spending contributed to his financial troubles. In May, he sold the family home in London for £2.4 million, below the original asking price of £3.3 million. The day after the property sale, he was declared bankrupt and ordered to use his share of the proceeds to cover an overdrawn director’s loan amounting to more than £366,500.
The auction and property sale are part of Dallaglio’s ongoing attempts to settle outstanding debts as he navigates bankruptcy proceedings.
