Barcelona have secured the signing of Brazilian forward Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal on a contract running until 2029, following unsuccessful attempts to acquire Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid. The Catalan club announced the agreement on Tuesday, with Spanish reports indicating a transfer fee of approximately 10 million euros ($11.5 million).

Jesus arrives to reinforce an attack that has been weakened by the summer exits of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres. Barcelona had prioritized the acquisition of Alvarez throughout the transfer window, but Atletico Madrid declined to enter negotiations, prompting the club to shift focus to Jesus.

Addressing his role as an alternative to Alvarez, Jesus expressed no resentment. “I’m not offended,” he said. “I have the chance to be here at Barcelona, I had a chance 10 years ago and life took me in another direction, but now I can be here and it’s a dream for me.” He emphasized his commitment to hard work and confidence in his abilities, stating, “I know my qualities, but work I think always pays off.”

Initially, Barcelona considered concluding the transfer window without signing a new central striker. Winger Raphinha had been utilized in a central attacking role, netting five goals in three games. However, the club ultimately chose to bring Jesus into the squad.

Barcelona coach Thomas Flick expressed enthusiasm about the signing ahead of the announcement, praising Jesus’s playing style and suitability for the team. “I really love him. I like his style to play football. It fits with our style. I think he can help us a lot in the games,” Flick said after Barcelona’s 5-2 victory against Rayo Vallecano, a match Jesus attended at Camp Nou. He also commended the club’s sporting director Deco for securing the deal.

Jesus, 29, has faced challenges in recent years, including a significant knee injury sustained in January 2025 that impacted his role at Arsenal, where he found himself behind Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres in the squad hierarchy under manager Mikel Arteta. During his four seasons at Arsenal, Jesus scored 32 goals. Prior to that, he amassed 95 goals in six years with Manchester City.

Reflecting on his recent form, Jesus acknowledged a difficult period but affirmed his readiness to contribute at Barcelona. “I’ve had a bit of a tough time these past two years, but apart from that, everyone knows my quality,” he said. “I’m doing very well, very well physically. The knee is no longer a problem. I recovered very well and returned to playing very well with Arsenal. My knee and my body are fine, I’m ready to give my best.”
