Barcelona moved closer to securing the 2025-26 La Liga title following a 2-0 victory over Getafe on Sunday. Goals from Fermin Lopez and Marcus Rashford helped the defending champions extend their lead at the top of the table to 11 points over second-placed Real Madrid, who were held to a draw by Real Betis on Friday.
With five matches remaining, Barcelona can clinch their second consecutive La Liga crown if they win their upcoming fixture against Osasuna and Real Madrid fail to defeat Espanyol. Manager Hansi Flick stressed the importance of maintaining focus, stating that the team intends to concentrate on each remaining game rather than prematurely celebrating the title.
Barcelona faced a resilient Getafe side, who are positioned sixth in the standings under coach Jose Bordalas. Despite missing key wingers Lamine Yamal and Raphinha due to injury, Barcelona managed to control the match, although creating clear-cut chances proved difficult against a strategy designed to disrupt their rhythm through frequent fouls.
Flick made tactical adjustments by introducing Swedish winger Roony Bardghji in place of Yamal and deploying Lopez on the left wing. The opening goal came just before halftime when Pedri set up Lopez, who calmly converted the chance despite wearing a protective face mask sustained during a recent Champions League quarter-final clash. Lopez paid tribute to the sidelined Yamal with a customary celebration, emphasizing the young player's importance to the squad and wishing him a full recovery in time for the World Cup.
In the second half, Getafe pushed forward in search of an equalizer, but Barcelona created more scoring opportunities. Dani Olmo came close following a cross from Jules Kounde, whose subsequent headed attempt narrowly missed the target. Martin Satriano had a chance for Getafe, but it was Rashford who secured the victory after being set up by Robert Lewandowski. The England international capitalized on space to slide a low shot past Getafe goalkeeper David Soria.
Flick praised Rashford’s impactful contribution, noting his quick adaptation and clinical finish. From Getafe’s perspective, goalkeeper Soria acknowledged Barcelona’s efficiency in converting their chances and reflected on the challenges of trailing at halftime.
Barcelona now stand in a commanding position to claim La Liga, with the focus firmly on maintaining consistency in their final fixtures to confirm the title.
