The Florida Panthers have placed center Aleksander Barkov on long-term injured reserve following a left leg injury sustained during Thursday night’s game against the San Jose Sharks. The move means Barkov will be sidelined for at least the next 10 games, with the possibility of a longer absence. The team has not disclosed specific details regarding the injury, and evaluations are ongoing. Barkov is scheduled to meet with Panthers team physicians on Monday, according to head coach Paul Maurice.

Barkov, the Panthers’ captain and a key contributor to their Stanley Cup victories in 2024 and 2025, was injured midway through the second period of the 4-3 overtime loss. The injury occurred as he battled for the puck along the boards and was pushed by Sharks defenseman Darnell Nurse, causing Barkov’s left leg to buckle at an unnatural angle. After briefly remaining on the ice, Barkov stood and limped off toward the team’s dressing room, appearing visibly frustrated.

This latest setback follows Barkov’s absence for the entire 2025-26 season due to torn ligaments in his right knee. He had appeared in only two games so far this season without recording any points. The Panthers are scheduled to play the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday.

In response to Barkov’s placement on injured reserve, Florida recalled center Sam Lafferty and defenseman Alexander Petrovic to the active roster. Meanwhile, the team received some positive updates on other injured players. Maurice indicated that forward Brad Marchand is nearing a return, and defenseman Gustav Forsling remains a game-time decision for Sunday’s matchup.

The Panthers will continue to monitor Barkov’s condition closely as they navigate this latest challenge during their campaign.
