Newcastle United winger Harvey Barnes has outlined the club’s ambitions for the upcoming season, emphasizing that mere consolidation is not the goal for the Magpies following a 12th-place finish in the Premier League last term. After missing out on European football, Barnes expressed confidence that Newcastle will return to continental competitions in the near future.
Barnes, who recently signed a contract extension keeping him at the club until 2030, acknowledged the increased responsibility he expects to shoulder this season. The 28-year-old noted that as his confidence grows, so does his role within the team. He joined Newcastle from Leicester City for £38 million but initially struggled with a foot injury that sidelined him for roughly 30 games in his first season. Since then, however, Barnes has delivered a solid return, scoring 30 goals in 120 appearances.
“It was a weird start. I struggled with an injury for a few months. It is always hard when you start somewhere new,” Barnes said. “Since then, I have got myself in the team and put in the groundwork, and the rewards have come for that hard work and patience. Last season was really positive, this season I want to build on that.”
The club is also undergoing a significant transition this summer, with several players departing and new, younger signings arriving. One notable acquisition is Ivory Coast international Bazoumana Toure, who joined Newcastle from Hoffenheim in a £43 million transfer under the management of Eddie Howe. Barnes welcomed the addition of fresh talent, viewing it as injecting new energy into the squad.
Barnes also reflected on his experience competing on big European nights, including scoring against Barcelona in the Champions League last season. He expressed determination to help Newcastle return to that stage regularly and compete for trophies after the club’s recent Carabao Cup success.
“I have had that taste of success and those special nights. It is just wanting more of that, really. And being a key player in doing that,” Barnes said. “Everyone here wants to push the club onto the next level. More silverware, Champions League nights, year-on-year building on that. This year will be different with no Europe, but it gives us the platform to kick on for the following season.”
Barnes’ remarks suggest Newcastle’s focus remains firmly fixed on growth and competitiveness as they aim to reestablish themselves among England’s top clubs and secure a return to European competition.
