Basingstoke Town ended a sluggish run without victory by defeating Malvern 4-1 in a National League South match on Saturday. The game, held at Basingstoke’s home ground, saw the hosts struggle in the opening 45 minutes before pulling away decisively after halftime.
The first half was marked by few clear chances, with Malvern’s Joe Tumelty coming closest when his shot inside the box was blocked. Basingstoke’s Jezz Okine-Peters also missed a gilt-edged opportunity, scuffing a shot wide. The deadlock was broken on the stroke of halftime when Bernie Tanner delivered a pinpoint cross that was forced over the line amid a crowd of players in the Malvern penalty area.
Basingstoke improved their intensity significantly after the break. Scott Armsworth doubled the lead by volleying a cross that flew over goalkeeper Leo McCormick and hit the far post before going in. As the match opened up, both sides saw attempts come close, with Okine-Peters’ heavy touch denying him a one-on-one chance. Malvern also had a penalty appeal turned down during this period.
Malvern pulled a goal back with about 15 minutes remaining when Harry Clark capitalized on a defensive error to score. However, Basingstoke quickly restored their two-goal advantage when debutant Larry Omoregie set up Okine-Peters, who found the back of the net from close range. Later, Billy Upton struck the post for the hosts before Christos Papakonstantinou capped off the scoring with a fourth goal.
The victory marked Basingstoke’s first since August, providing momentum as they look to improve their fortunes this season. Malvern, meanwhile, will look to regroup after surrendering a lead and facing their second consecutive defeat.
