Bath Rugby secured a dominant 40-13 victory over an injury-hit Harlequins side at the Recreation Ground on Saturday, maintaining their position in second place in the Gallagher Premiership. Bath scored eight tries in the match, showcasing the squad’s depth and versatility as they prepare for upcoming domestic and European challenges.

Santi Carreras was a standout performer for Bath, crossing the try line twice from his fullback position before switching to fly-half for much of the second half. His dynamic play highlighted Bath’s range of attacking options, contrasting sharply with a depleted Harlequins team struggling to find cohesion. Guy Pepper also contributed a try midway through the second half, marking Bath’s 150th try across all competitions this season and pushing their season’s total points beyond 1,000.

Harlequins arrived at the fixture severely undermanned, listing 27 players unavailable due to injury. Their inability to field a full-strength squad was evident, with key players Luke Northmore and Jarrod Evans sidelined due to injury before and during the match. Evans’s early exit with a shoulder injury forced flanker Alex Dombrandt to shift into the centre in the final stages, illustrating the squad’s thin resources. Despite the challenges, Dombrandt delivered a formidable individual performance, prompting calls for his reconsideration for national team selection.

Bath controlled the game from the outset. Tom Carr-Smith, replacing the injured scrum-half and captain Ben Spencer, scored an early try, followed shortly by Carreras’s opportunistic try after intercepting Harlequins’ fly-half Evans’s pass on their own 22. Although Harlequins responded through centre Bryn Bradley, Bath steadily extended their lead with tries from Tom Dunn, Ewan Richards, Josh Bayliss, and Bernhard van der Linde.

Fly-half Finn Russell had an uneven game, turning over possession that led to one of Harlequins’ scores before being substituted during the second half with Bath’s victory effectively secured. Bath’s bench impact was significant, with fresh legs contributing late tries and sustaining their momentum.

Harlequins managed two tries themselves, including one from Kieran Treadwell, but struggled to mount sustained pressure. A try from Alex Dombrandt was disallowed for obstruction, and the visitors managed only a Marcus Smith penalty to supplement their tally.

The win keeps Bath well placed for their forthcoming European semi-final against Bordeaux Bègles and their Premiership fixture against Northampton. For Harlequins, the result underlines the severe impact injuries have had on their campaign, with just three wins from 13 league matches.

Referee Sam Cox officiated the game, which was played in front of a crowd of approximately 14,500 spectators.
