Cooper Bai is at the center of a three-way competition for his services ahead of the 2027 NRL season, with the New Zealand-based Chiefs, Sydney Roosters, and Melbourne Storm all expressing interest in securing the young forward’s signature. The 19-year-old, currently contracted to the Gold Coast Titans, has refused to return to the club for pre-season training, setting the stage for a bidding war.
Bai, the son of Melbourne Storm and Papua New Guinea rugby league legend Marcus Bai, traveled to Papua New Guinea on Wednesday to meet with officials from the newly launched Pacific franchise Chiefs. The Chiefs have formally offered a three-year deal to Bai as they prepare to enter the NRL in 2028. However, Marcus Bai confirmed that the Roosters and Storm remain very much in contention, with both clubs having expressed strong interest in the promising forward.
Despite initially agreeing to terms with Melbourne earlier this year, Bai reversed course after a conversation with new Titans coach Josh Hannay and committed to Gold Coast. He now appears determined to move on, however, opening the door to alternate suitors. Marcus Bai, who serves on the Chiefs board, declined to directly intervene in negotiations due to a conflict of interest but emphasized that all three clubs represent appealing options.
Cooper Bai made his NRL debut in the final round of the 2025 season and featured prominently throughout 2026, starting nine games at lock and earning praise for his aggressive, tackle-breaking playing style. He is considered one of the most exciting forward prospects in the league and has already represented Queensland at under-19s level, with some seeing him as a potential NSW State of Origin candidate.
A significant factor complicating Bai’s next move is his reluctance to sign with two clubs in consecutive seasons. Should he choose the Chiefs, he would need to secure a different club for the 2027 season since the Chiefs will not enter the competition until 2028. Chiefs marquee signing Jarome Luai is also contracted elsewhere for 2027, creating further uncertainty. Bai has expressed a preference for a long-term commitment to a single club to build his career stability.
The Roosters, reigning NRL premiers, offer Bai the opportunity to join a strong roster rich in experienced forwards, while Melbourne’s storied history with his family and proven coaching staff position them as clear contenders. Meanwhile, the Chiefs present a unique chance to become a foundational player for a new franchise linked to Bai’s Papua New Guinea roots.
Marcus Bai acknowledged the difficult choice facing his son, underscoring the quality of offers and the significance of the decision. “Cooper says he would prefer to move just once,” he said. “The Roosters and Melbourne are big chances; both have excellent coaches and development pathways. But the Chiefs have made a very good offer, too.” The final decision is expected to unfold in the coming weeks as Bai weighs his options.
