Tensions within the British royal family surfaced amid conflicting statements over accommodation arrangements for the Duke of Sussex during his visit to the United Kingdom this week. The situation escalated when Prince Harry’s office announced that the duke had accepted an offer to stay at Buckingham Palace, only for the palace to quickly deny the claim.
The dispute appears to stem from differing accounts of the timeline and conditions surrounding the offer. Reports indicate that King Charles III had extended an invitation for Harry and his family to stay at Buckingham Palace some time ago, with a request that the duke respond by the end of last week. Harry initially declined the offer on Saturday but later reconsidered. However, after consultation with the King, palace officials informed Harry that, due to ongoing major renovations, suitable accommodations at Buckingham Palace were no longer available.
A representative for Harry described the palace decision as a “withdrawal” of the offer and expressed disappointment over the development. This episode follows several instances of miscommunication between Harry and the rest of the royal family leading up to his visit.
Originally, Harry planned to travel with the Duchess of Sussex and their children, Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five. Current arrangements have him arriving in the UK alone, with the possibility that his family may join him later in the week.
Harry arrived in the UK on the evening of July 6. Meanwhile, working members of the royal family continued with their scheduled duties. King Charles made a notable visit to the Tank Museum in Bovington, Dorset, marking his first engagement with the regiment as colonel-in-chief—a role he assumed following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Arriving in a 1920 Pattern Rolls-Royce armoured car, the same vehicle his mother used during a 1997 visit, the King remarked humorously on its speed, calling it “very slow.”
During the visit, Charles toured the Vehicle Conservation Centre and observed displays of modern battlefield drones and the Challenger 3 main battle tank. He also toured the museum’s Tank Story Hall, which highlights the evolution of armored vehicles from the First World War to today. For a concluding activity, the King took a ride in a Challenger 2 tank around the museum’s arena.
Elsewhere, the Princess of Wales, Kate, visited Evelina London Children’s Hospital near Westminster, where she has served as patron since 2018. During the tour of the hospital’s expanded cardiac centre, Kate met with young patients and their families. She engaged warmly with children, including three-year-old Arjun, who is receiving treatment for a rare pulmonary vein condition. Kate, 44, shared moments of lighthearted conversation and displayed a bracelet made by her daughter Charlotte.
The Prince and Princess of Wales have a full schedule of public engagements this week and are not expected to meet with Prince Harry during his visit. It remains unclear whether King Charles will find time for a private meeting with his younger son amid the ongoing tensions.
