SMK St Bernadette’s Convent in Batu Gajah, Perak, is seeking funds to address a significant soil erosion issue affecting a slope behind the school. The project, estimated to cost approximately RM690,000, aims to stabilize the terrain and prevent further damage to the perimeter wall, ensuring the safety of students and staff.

Principal V. Krishnaveni explained that the erosion problem began in 2022 when water began pooling in the area, causing the wall to lean and sinkholes to develop. Although a contractor was hired to construct a manhole to help disperse the water, the situation has deteriorated. Experts including contractors, engineers, and geologists have since advised the construction of a retention structure combined with a drainage system to mitigate the erosion.

Currently, the affected slope is cordoned off to keep students away, but the risk remains significant. The planned mitigation work involves building a retention structure to support the slope, which will help prevent the collapse of the nearby perimeter wall.

To raise money for the project, the school is organizing a charity event scheduled for September 12. As of now, approximately RM37,000 has been collected toward the target. The school administration has expressed hope for additional support from the Education Ministry and relevant government agencies.

Prof. Dr. B. Vishalache, chairman of the school’s board of governors and a faculty member at Universiti Malaya’s Education Faculty, encouraged former students to contribute to the fundraising efforts. Highlighting the importance of alumni involvement, she called on past students to assist in supporting the school’s infrastructure needs.

Recently, alumni from the Class of 1973 visited the school and contributed RM10,100 toward the project. The school has made itself available for contact and inquiries at 05-366 1577.
