Bay City Roller secured a surprise victory in the £1 million Coolmore Coronation Cup at Epsom on Derby Day, defying pre-race expectations to claim his first Group One triumph. The six-horse field featured leading contenders Calandagan, the highest-rated turf horse globally in 2025, last year’s narrowly beaten winner Jan Brueghel, and Lambourn, a dual Derby winner and stablemate of Jan Brueghel.
The race unfolded on rain-softened ground, which appeared to play a significant role in the outcome. Ballydoyle’s pacemaker Illinois failed to maintain an effective front-running position, prompting jockey Wayne Lordan to send Lambourn to the front approaching Tattenham Corner. Close behind was Bay City Roller, ridden by Oisin Murphy, who found a favorable position down the center of the track in the straight—a tactical move that proved decisive.
Bay City Roller accelerated strongly in the final stages, pulling clear by 10 lengths from the remainder of the field. Jan Brueghel, who struggled to travel well throughout the race, staged a late rally to secure second place ahead of Lambourn. Calandagan, who also faced difficulties adapting to the condition, finished a distant fourth.
Trainer George Scott, celebrating his first top-level victory, described the result as an "outer-body experience." He expressed satisfaction in seeing Bay City Roller perform on ground conditions well-suited to the horse’s abilities. Scott praised Bay City Roller’s professionalism and work ethic, highlighting the horse’s preference for the mile-and-a-half distance while acknowledging his versatility over shorter trips.
“We’ve known for a while how good he is on this kind of ground,” Scott said. “He’s a very good horse and I’m so pleased he got to show it today.” When discussing future plans, Scott indicated uncertainty about giving Bay City Roller a break before targeting the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. The plan is to prepare the horse for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, which Scott identified as the campaign’s primary goal.
Scott added that if Bay City Roller had not won the Coronation Cup, the Hardwicke Stakes might have been the next target, but that option is now off the table. The trainer reflected on the significance of the victory for himself and his long-time supporters, emphasizing the emotional impact of the achievement.
Bay City Roller’s upset over heavily favored rivals has injected fresh interest into the midsummer middle-distance division, particularly ahead of the season’s remaining top-tier events.
